New Directions

Hello all!

It’s been a while since my last post, and you may have noticed that I’ve made a few changes about the place. Inevitably you’ll be wondering what the hell is going on, and where everything is. You may have even noticed that all the previous blog posts have disappeared, and eagle eyed readers might even have noticed that the name of the blog has changed.

Undoubtedly you’re all on tenterhooks (what is a tenterhook?) to know the reason why, and I shan’t keep you in that painful anticipation any longer. I’m starting in a new direction with this blog, since the poetry challenge had run its course, and I have been spending more time on projects outside the realm of poetry, so I’ve had nothing new to post on a poetry blog. Back when the poetry challenge was in full swing one of my ideas was to expand the blog once I’d finished to include more of my other work, particularly my play writing, and I think it’s time to do that now. So, this is the reason for the new direction.

But why demolish the site as we know it? I’ve hit the site with a bit of a purging flame, but I’ll be restoring some of the original content as soon as I can. It’s likely I’ll be dropping some of the poems out, because I’ve been offered an opportunity to publish them by a great new publisher. I’ll bringing you more news on that as and when I have it, and keeping you updated on the process.

But in exchange for the loss of poetry content, I will be bringing you excerpts and extracts of other work, and news about my current projects. Hopefully, this will be a bit more expansive, strike a few more chords, and more than make up for the redesign. In addition, I’ll be taking a more personal hand in the blog writing, giving you various snippets of what I’m up to, and my thoughts and musings on the world as I see it.

Some of you might be wondering why the blog is now called “Secret Fire”. Obviously with this new direction I couldn’t keep the name “A Poem a Day” (I never much liked that name, but I couldn’t think up a witty alternative when I started the challenge). So, a name change was needed. As this site is meant to be about writing, about my writing, about me writing, and about what I’m up to, it seemed to make sense to pick something I associate with writing. Writing for me is a secret fire. It’s passion itself. It builds up inside of you and it wants to come out, and it makes you very unhappy and frustrated when you don’t allow it to. It’s always there. Sometimes it’s a candle in the darkness, and other times it’s a roaring inferno that could engulf you. It’s secret since the only person who knows what it’s like, and that it’s there at all is you. People may see you writing, may know you’re a writer, but they don’t know that roar, that heat, that flame. It is passion. It is love. And it makes even our shadows dance.

So, that’s the new direction sorted, and I’ll be updating the rest of the site over the next week or so. I hope that you enjoy the new direction and that Secret Fire will bring some light into your life.

Cheers,
Nick
