If I Told You I Loved You

In a few days’ time it will be opening night of my second play The Way Things Are. I’m excited. I’m nervous. But I think everything’s more or less under control. To get you in the mood, here is a poem I wrote recently, which I think all the characters of the play can relate to.

If I Told You I Loved You

If I told you I loved you
would that be good?
It should. I’m not sure.
I’ve had these sorts of feelings before
and they reached no conclusion
except utter confusion.

But what is love for
if not the telling?
Well, the cynical selling
of cards and stylised hearts.

My heart is not stylised
But it might as well be
If you’re going to tell me
You don’t feel the same –
that I’ve misunderstood.
But I don’t think you would.

So if I told you I loved you
would that be good?
