I Miss & Other Poems

I Miss

I miss your morning messages
I miss the nervousness I get just before I see you
I miss the euphoria of having just seen you
where I feel like I could run a thousand miles
I miss your smile

I miss waiting for your next reply
I miss the hungry passion of each goodbye
I miss your eyes when you look at me
Your frown when you don’t
The scent of you on my clothes
And the feeling of you in my arms
I miss the thought of you undressed distracting me for a while
I miss your smile

I miss the beauty of your laughter
The comfort of your touch
I miss the way you edit everything you say as you’re saying it
And I miss threatening to pick you up because you hate it
I miss kissing your neck
I miss kissing you entirely too much
I miss the way I feel when I’m with you
And the way I feel when I’m not

That persistent drumming of longing for you that is my heartbeat
Driving me back into your arms
The safest and the best place I know
I miss knowing that I’ll return to you
No matter the distance and never regret a mile
I miss your smile

Misheard Honours

Re: the Poet Laureate
I’d hate to be invested:
No amount of royal prestige
Is worth being part-ingested.

Star On A Peg

A star on a peg
That was the first present you bought me
Something that I never knew I needed
A star on a peg

It sits by my bedside
Attached to the first note you ever wrote me
Even when it’s too dark to read it
It sits by my bedside

A star on a peg
Such a small thing, a simple token – like you
Someone that I never knew I needed
A star on a peg

In Vein

You ask me how it is I write,
Saying “Why can’t that be me?”
I tell you it can, if that’s what you want
Sit down and let the pen bleed.

But I don’t know where to begin;
It’s science that makes sense to me.
I tell you to try, if that’s what you want
Sit down and set your heart free.

If you want to write then do it,
Practice makes perfect, you see.
Just sit down alone and set your heart free
Sit down and let the pen bleed.
