Fingerprints & Other Poems

Fingerprints

there’s a fingerprint in the beer
where some bubbles grouped together
like carol-singers for the warmth
in crisp December weather

there’s a fingerprint in the beer
that you pulled with your own fair hands
as you smiled your radiant smile
the one that gives my heart commands

it’s one of those chance connections
that I can’t bear to break apart
there’s a fingerprint in the beer
and your fingerprints on my heart

at 7.30 am

at 7.30 am
on three hours’ sleep
I sit alone

exhaustion lurks out of sight
like a tidal wave warning
the impeding crash that will crush
this beach house to tinder

there’s fire in my belly
but only the heartburn

makes me sick to the stomach

at 7.30 am
on three hours’ sleep
I sit alone

listening to the waking sounds
of a weary world outside my window
wishing myself still oblivious—
gloriously asleep. I am not.

longing for an embrace
of sleep or of tender arms
interlocked limbs – a tangle of dreams
and hair fanned on the pillow

at 7.30 am
on three hours’ sleep
I sit alone

The Mirror

Art holds a mirror up to life
Clear cut, sharp as a knife
Art holds a mirror up to life

Art is memory on the page
The body’s a canvas, the world’s a stage
Art is memory on the page

Memory is life in the back of a spoon
Bends the light, changes the tune
Memory is life in the back of a spoon

Memory’s not the same as proof
It blacks out light and ages youth
Art holds a mirror up to untruth
